Four children were among seven people killed when a loaded bakkie careened off a bridge and into a dam, on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, at the weekend.
Over the course of a lengthy recovery operation, IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics and police officers from Durban’s SAPS Search and Rescue unit pulled a total of seven bodies from the depths of the Mvutshane Dam, in Maphumulo, on Sunday afternoon.
IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst said six were pulled from the wreckage, while one was located outside of the car.
The deceased, who were all relatives, included a 10-month-old baby boy, a 3-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy.
Also killed were an 18-year-old man, a 31-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man.
Herbst said initial reports suggested the driver had lost control of the Toyota Venture they were traveling in.
IPSS and police returned to the scene on Monday morning to try to recover the vehicle.
