Seun Kuti, the son of famed artist Fela Kuti, was detained and handcuffed after visiting Lagos State Police Commissioner Idowu Owohunwa on Monday.
Seun Kuti fulfilled his promise to cooperate with the police by turning himself in today.
Seun Kuti proceeded to meet with the police commissioner, accompanied by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika.
Upon arriving, however, he was promptly seized and handcuffed by police and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department at Panti for questioning.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police command’s spokesperson, verified Seun Kuti’s arrest through Twitter.
“SERIOUS ASSAULT ON POLICE OFFICER: SEUN KUTI TURNS SELF IN. Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in the company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest in line with the law.”
Seun Kuti was arrested after a video leaked online showing him in a heated dispute with a police officer stationed in the middle of a busy road.
IGP Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has ordered Seun Kuti’s arrest and directed a full inquiry into the incident.
Seun Kuti responded to the event on his Instagram Story, claiming that the cop had attempted to hurt him and his family.
He did, however, admit that the officer had apologized and that he had decided not to seek charges.
Seun Kuti also declared his desire to fully collaborate with authorities in order to find the truth and appealed for a fair inquiry.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force, had earlier released a statement on behalf of the IGP, stating:
“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated, while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”
Seun Kuti’s detention has sparked widespread interest in Nigeria and throughout the world as the inquiry continues.
