The founder of the One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has expressed readiness to assist in securing the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu but only if certain conditions are fulfilled.
Maharaj Ji made the remarks during an interview on his temple’s internal radio station on Wednesday.
He emphasized that any sincere effort to free Kanu must start with halting the Biafra radio broadcasts and ending the sit-at-home directives in the South-East.
Maharaj Ji: Release must come through political compromise
The spiritual leader maintained that Kanu still faces terrorism-related charges and noted that such offences typically carry the death penalty.
He explained that Kanu’s continued survival was “by grace,” stressing that only a political agreement not legal battles could pave the way for his eventual freedom.
He stated, “Anybody who is accused of doing such a thing (terrorism) is sentenced to death. It is only out of grace that Kanu was able to escape. So now it has to be by political settlement before he can be released.”
Maharaj Ji further insisted that anyone seeking to negotiate Kanu’s release must present tangible commitments, saying, “They must not do so with empty hands; they should stop the Biafra radio wherever it is.”
Growing support for a political solution
Maharaj Ji’s stance aligns with calls from several prominent Nigerians including Abia State governor Alex Otti and activist Omoyele Sowore who have urged the government to adopt a political approach to resolving the prolonged case.
He urged residents of the South-East to remain optimistic, assuring them that ongoing efforts aimed at securing Kanu’s freedom have not stalled.
Governor Otti previously visited Kanu at the Sokoto prison and subsequently met with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja to explore possible pathways toward his release.
