A housewife in Mexico has given birth to sextuplets, more than 12 years after she had quadruplets.
Salud Romero Ruiz, 31, from Michoacan, added four girls and two boys to her family after complications forced doctors to perform a Caesarean section at 27 weeks.
The babies, who weigh as little as 590g (1lb 5oz), are in intensive care in the central city of Morelia, due to their ‘delicate’ health.
According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, hospital director Yara Pineda admitted the babies were in a ‘delicate [condition] because they are underweight, because of their lack of pulmonary development and because of all the complications associated with artificial respiration’.
She added: ‘The doctors caring for the minors are making every possible effort to keep them healthy and breathing by themselves.’
Only two of the quads survived in 2001. Ms Romero is not thought to have undergone IVF treatment in either pregnancy.
