Mohamed Salah, winger for Liverpool F.C., has etched his name in history after becoming the first African player to score 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League.
The Egyptian star reached the milestone on Wednesday night during Liverpool’s emphatic 4-0 win over Galatasaray at Anfield, a result that sealed a 4-1 aggregate victory and qualification for the quarter-finals.
Salah netted his landmark goal in the 62nd minute with a trademark curling effort into the top corner.
With this achievement, the 33-year-old becomes just the 12th player in the competition’s history to reach the 50-goal mark.
Out of his total tally, 47 goals have come for Liverpool, with two scored during his time at FC Basel and one for AS Roma. He has now surpassed the previous African record of 44 goals held by Didier Drogba.
Salah now leads the African scoring chart in the competition, sitting six goals ahead of Drogba, who netted 44 goals in 92 appearances.
In third place is Samuel Eto’o with 30 goals in 78 matches, followed by Sadio Mané, who scored 27 goals in 64 games. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completes the top five with 20 goals in 46 appearances.
