The Reserve Bank in South Africas has announced that about 2 million coins bearing the face of former president Nelson Mandela will come into circulation from next month.
Reserve Bank governor Gill Marcus says both theR5 and R2 coins carry the same value as ordinary coins.
The unveiling also marks the country’s celebration of 20th year of democracy.
According to Marcus “The 200 coin depicts casting his first vote. The silver coin features the flag, and the commemorative R5 celebrates the freedom. There will be 2.4 million coins put into circulation, which will take place as from next month.”
