The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has disassociated itself from protesters in Northern Nigeria who raised Russian flags during demonstrations. The embassy emphasized that the protesters’ actions were their own and condemned any violent protests.
Recent accusations have surfaced regarding Russia’s involvement in the internal affairs of several West African countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Niger Republic.
Russia Denies Involvement in Nigerian Protests
The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has clarified that it has no connection with the protesters who carried Russian flags and chanted slogans in Northern Nigeria. This comes amid concerns about external interference in the region, given Russia’s alleged involvement in political events in West African nations.
Russia has firmly denied any knowledge of the protests, which some viewed as undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty. The embassy reiterated that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries, including Nigeria, and that the actions of the protesters do not represent official Russian government policy.
Respect for Nigerian Democracy
In a statement released on Monday, August 5, the embassy stated that the decision of the protesters to wave Russian flags was personal and not reflective of any official Russian stance. The embassy also expressed respect for Nigerian democracy and the right to peaceful demonstrations while condemning any violence that may arise from such events.
The statement reads in part: “As always, we emphasize that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria. These intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of individuals, and they do not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government in the issue.”
Reactions from Nigerian Authorities
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence, General Chris Musa, has labeled the protesters’ actions as treasonous and warned that legal consequences would follow.
