The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed readiness to welcome Governor Siminalayi Fubara if he decides to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join their ranks.
Speaking to Punch on Tuesday through his Chief of Staff, Chizi Enyi, APC State Chairman Emeka Beke said the move would be mutually advantageous. He emphasized that Fubara’s defection would enhance the APC’s influence and visibility in Rivers State’s political landscape.
Beke’s statement follows rising speculation that Fubara may consider switching parties as part of a political resolution to the crisis that resulted in his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
“We’ll gladly receive the governor. Do we even have a choice?” Beke said. “His joining the APC would strategically reposition the party in Rivers.”
He added that governors from opposition parties often face setbacks in accessing federal support and participating fully in state affairs. If Fubara joins the APC, he would automatically assume leadership of the party in the state, allowing the APC to play a more active role in governance and decision-making.
Beke also mentioned that while the APC had previously withheld advice from the government due to its opposition role, this would change if Fubara became a member. “We have ideas to improve governance in Rivers, but we’ve held back. If he joins us, we’ll be open to offering support and contributing to the betterment of the state,” he said.
