Reports have surfaced claiming that Mojtaba Khamenei, believed to be Iran’s new Supreme Leader, is currently in a coma after sustaining severe injuries from recent airstrikes.
According to reports published by The Sun and Daily Mail, Khamenei reportedly lost at least one leg and suffered major internal injuries, possibly affecting his stomach or liver.
Sources claim he is currently receiving treatment at Sina University Hospital, located in the historic district of Tehran. Reports also suggest that security forces have cordoned off parts of the hospital building.
An unnamed source, who reportedly feared for his safety, disclosed that the leader is being treated by Mohammad Reza Zafargjani, Iran’s Minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, who is also regarded as one of the country’s leading trauma surgeons.
Information on Zafargjani’s Persian Wikipedia page notes that he spent eight years performing surgeries during the Iran–Iraq War. During that war, he was also reportedly injured by chemical weapons.
The minister is said to be working alongside another senior surgeon, Mohammad Marashi, who is related to the wife of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and is considered a trusted figure within the Islamic government.
Reports further claim that Iran’s current president, Masoud Pezeshkian, visited the injured leader two days ago and is said to be receiving regular updates on his medical condition.
The source reportedly communicated the situation through encrypted messages to an exiled dissident based in London, stating: ‘One or two of his legs have been cut off. His liver or stomach has also ruptured. He is apparently in a coma as well.’
Although Khamenei has not been seen publicly for several weeks, reports suggest that the country is currently being overseen by regional commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who are said to have orders to continue military operations indefinitely.
