Iconic Jamaican reggae icon Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers, has passed away at 81.
The news of his death was confirmed by his wife, Latifa Chambers, who revealed that he died after suffering a seizure that later led to pneumonia.
Cliff’s life and legacy
Jimmy Cliff played a pivotal role in taking reggae music to the world stage. He is remembered for unforgettable classics such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Many Rivers to Cross,” and his rendition of “I Can See Clearly Now.”
Beyond music, Cliff also made a significant impact in film, especially through his lead role in the 1972 classic The Harder They Come, a project widely credited with helping introduce Jamaican culture and reggae to international audiences.
Throughout his decades-long career, he earned major honors including two Grammy Awards, Jamaica’s Order of Merit, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
