Reece James, captain of Chelsea F.C., has agreed to a fresh six-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
The 26-year-old defender came through Chelsea’s youth academy and made his senior debut for the club in September 2019.
Details of the new deal, first reported by The Athletic, indicate that the contract will continue to include an incentive-based structure tied to both individual achievements and team success.
The England national football team international is currently Chelsea’s top earner, reportedly receiving £250,000 per week.
James’ previous contract was set to run until 2028, making his renewal a key priority for the club. He had signed that earlier agreement soon after the takeover of Chelsea by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022.
So far this season, James has started 19 of his 26 matches in the Premier League and has accumulated 225 appearances for the club overall.
Negotiations for the extension are believed to have moved quickly, with the defender encouraged by the progress he has made in recovering from a number of injuries that disrupted several of his recent seasons.
He underwent surgery in December 2023 to address a recurring hamstring problem.
During his time with Chelsea, James has helped the club secure several major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 2021, the UEFA Super Cup later that same year, as well as the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2025 and the FIFA Club World Cup.
He was appointed Chelsea captain three years ago.
If he remains fit and maintains his form, James is expected to be a leading candidate for the right-back position for England at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
