Real Madrid’s new signing, Kylian Mbappe, is rumored to receive a new shirt number for his debut season at the club.
The Mirror reports that the French star will wear the No. 9 jersey for Los Blancos, following the footsteps of iconic players such as Alfredo Di Stefano, Ronaldo Nazario, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema. The number has been vacant since Benzema’s departure from the Bernabeu in 2023.
Mbappe has only previously worn the No. 9 shirt once in his career, during Monaco’s 2017 French National Cup. During most of that season, Radamel Falcao wore the number for the Ligue 1 side.
In his career, the 25-year-old has worn numbers 11, 29, 13, 33, and 39 for Monaco, and 7, 14, 17, and 29 for PSG. For the French national team, he has worn the No. 10 shirt since 2017-18, and previously wore numbers 12 and 20.
Real Madrid has announced that Mbappe will be presented as a player for the club the week after Spain eliminated France from Euro 2024. The headline signing penned a five-year contract with Real after leaving Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
In addition, several shirt numbers for the team have changed. Eduardo Camavinga will take over the No. 6 jersey following the departure of Nacho Fernandez, and Federico Valverde will wear the No. 8 after Euro 2024, previously worn by Toni Kroos.
After Joselu’s tenure wearing the jersey last season, Aurelian Tchouameni will now wear the No. 14. Furthermore, 18-year-old Jesus Vallejo will take Tchouameni’s former No. 14, and promising Turkish player Arda Guler will wear the No. 15 after wearing No. 24 last season.
