Road and rail networks are both disrupted, with frustrated passengers also stranded at airports.
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed a fatal crash in “very difficult” weather conditions on the A458 in Shropshire, around 9.30pm last night.
A man was also left seriously injured in the same incident.
Dorset Fire Control said crews rescued approximately 25 people from cars in Sturminster, Blandford, Shaftesbury, Sherborne and Wimborne.
The Energy Networks Association said 100,000 homes are without power, mainly in the south of England.
Widespread rail delays and cancellations are likely to cause misery for those travelling to friends and family today.
The Southern and Southeastern train companies suspended all services.
South West Trains said no trains would run before 10am, as they reported 28 trees blocking its lines, as well as six instances of flooding.

They reported greater storm damage in southern England than that caused by the St Jude storm last month.
She said: “I am fuming and absolutely desperate – there has been no information at all and we can’t make alternative plans.
“We’re just hanging in limbo… at least if they said ‘Nothing is going to happen, come back tomorrow’, but there is no information of any kind.
“It is absolutely choc-a-bloc and in the check-in room upstairs there are 50 people queuing for the one toilet that is working.”
A Gatwick spokesman said: “Due to the adverse weather overnight, Gatwick’s North Terminal is currently experiencing significant power outages across some areas including check-in.
“This is causing delays to some departing flights. South Terminal is operating as normal.
“We are investigating the cause of this issue to ensure it is resolved as soon as possible and extra staff are on hand to assist passengers.
“We are also advising passengers to leave extra time for their travel today due to weather-related road and rail disruption.”
On the roads, the M48 Severn crossing between England and south Wales was closed.
Flooding and fallen trees affected sections of the M25, the M5 in Gloucestershire, the A20 in Sidcup in south east London, the A22 in West Sussex, and the A25 in Surrey.
In Northern Ireland, winds reached up to 80mph on the north and east coasts, with police warning motorists of snow and black ice on some roads.
A woman also died in a river in Gwynedd, North Wales.
On Sunday, one man died in a six-car pile-up in the A30 in Cornwall, with police citing a freak hail storm.
