The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Benjamin Hundeyin, has responded to allegations made by influencer Papaya Ex, who claimed she was assaulted by a police officer in Lagos.
Earlier, the socialite shared a video on her Instagram page, displaying a bruise on her face, which she alleged was inflicted by a police officer.
Police PRO responds to allegation
In a statement released online, Hundeyin presented the police account of what reportedly happened before the incident.
According to him, around 2 a.m., officers on routine night patrol stopped a vehicle carrying three men and two women for inspection. He alleged that Papaya Ex refused to allow the officers to search the car, reportedly saying, “You cannot search my car. Don’t you know Papaya? Even your bosses know me.”
He explained that she then chose to head to the police station instead. After initially resisting, an officer eventually entered her vehicle while the patrol van followed behind. However, he claimed she instructed her driver to accelerate, creating a gap between her vehicle and the patrol team. As a result, the officers reportedly contacted another patrol unit stationed ahead to intercept them.
Hundeyin added that the Lagos State Police Command would take over the matter moving forward.
His words:
“The part before she went live
Just before 2am, police on night patrol stopped a car conveying three men and two women and asked to check the car. She bluntly refused saying, ‘You cannot search my car. Don’t you know Papaya? Even your bosses know me.’
She chose to rather go to the station after which an officer sat in her vehicle, not before an initial refusal. Her vehicle was in front while the patrol vehicle was following behind. She instructed her driver to speed off, leaving the patrol vehicle far behind. At that rate, the patrol van was going to lose them. The police had to radio the patrol team far ahead to intercept them. Then the live began…
