The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has sounded the alarm over the Nigerian Police’s invasion of its national headquarters, Rights House, in Ikeja, Lagos.
In a statement released by CDHR National President Comrade Debo Adeniran and National Publicity Secretary Comrade Idris Olayinka, it was noted that the police laid siege to the Rights House early on Friday morning, preventing occupants from entering the building.
The statement further explained that the police presence at Rights House was intended to disrupt the Education Rights Campaign Symposium, which was scheduled to take place in the main hall of the CDHR office.
“The police arrived in several Hilux vans, surrounding the CDHR National Headquarters, Rights House, and preventing participants from holding the event.
“We are using this opportunity to urge the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Police Commissioner to intervene and stop this unlawful interference with a peaceful assembly.
“Otherwise, this action would constitute a serious violation of the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech,” the statement concluded.
