Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election, has once again drawn public admiration after a heartfelt act of kindness toward an elderly woman went viral.
While on his way to attend the funeral of late Nollywood veteran Mrs. Nkechi Winifred Nweje, Obi reportedly spotted an elderly woman struggling to board a bus with a heavy bucket of goods. In the process, she fell, and her items scattered on the ground.
According to a post by @TheSerahIbrahim on X (formerly Twitter), Obi immediately instructed his driver to turn around. Upon reaching the scene, he stepped out of the car to assist the woman and ensure she wasn’t injured.
The grateful woman, surprised by his presence, smiled and requested a hug — which Obi warmly gave. Onlookers had already begun helping her gather her spilled items.
She explained she was heading to the market and the goods — worth ₦8,000 — were her only source of income. She had hoped to sell them for ₦10,000 to earn a small profit. With some items ruined, she feared losing even her initial investment.
Obi then generously reimbursed her for the loss. Overwhelmed with gratitude, the woman thanked him joyfully and even offered him some of her remaining goods in appreciation.
Serah used the touching moment to highlight the stark contrast between the struggles of everyday Nigerians and the opulence of the political elite. She emphasized the urgent need for a more compassionate and people-focused leadership, declaring, “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
The post quickly went viral, sparking reactions from across the country:
- @SimoncoleB: “A rare kind of man to find in Nigerian politics. For now, I doubt any politician in Nigeria has his qualities.”
- @RITAENG1234: “God please, give us H.E. Peter Obi as President soon. Amen.”
- @Akunn_a: “This is why it’s good that he travels with people, or we’d never hear of these selfless acts.”
- @oteessolutions1: “Meanwhile, we have a sitting senator who once told a widow to ‘go and die’ as a governor.”
- @MCARIZONA5: “Keep doing good — God has a way of rewarding kindness.”
- @segun_olomola: “A real leader leads with compassion, not from private jets while people suffer.”
- @Airdropglobal5: “Imagine a Nigeria led by someone with this kind of heart. A PO presidency is truly POssible!”
