Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has revealed that the party is actively reaching out to former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging him to rejoin the PDP.
Speaking during AIT’s Focus Nigeria programme on Friday, Gana confirmed that reconciliation efforts are ongoing and that Obi is among the key figures being approached.
When asked directly if the PDP had contacted Obi, Gana responded, “Why not?” He added that the party was also reaching out to other influential former members.
“We are also moving to other persons. But I don’t want to announce until we really get there,” he said.
Gana noted that the PDP is now in a more stable and organized state, making it a strong platform to bring back former members.
“I have a very solid platform. I can now go back to these people and say the platform you were complaining about is now set, proper, and ready to move. I know many of them would respond,” he added.
Peter Obi left the PDP on May 25, 2022, just before the party’s presidential primaries. He later emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. At the time, he cited internal issues within the PDP as his reason for leaving.
With the 2027 elections in view, the PDP is ramping up its restructuring efforts and seeking to strengthen its ranks including possibly welcoming back high-profile former members like Obi.
