The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has indicated its readiness to back former President Goodluck Jonathan if he chooses to contest for the presidency in 2027, describing him as the leader Nigeria needs at this critical time.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, revealed to a News Source that Jonathan enjoys widespread support and sympathy from Nigerians, especially given the ongoing national challenges.
“With the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) struggling to address the nation’s problems, a Jonathan comeback would be widely welcomed. The PDP wouldn’t hesitate to support him because he remains a party member, and we believe he has the capability to deliver,” Abdullahi stated.
He further added, “Nigerians now recognize Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as the dependable leader the nation needs. During his time in office, he maintained single-digit inflation, stabilized the Naira, and effectively managed the economy without resorting to floating the currency. The current administration’s removal of subsidies has caused inflation to soar, in stark contrast to Jonathan’s economic strategies.”
Abdullahi also addressed criticisms of Jonathan’s security record, stating, “The accusations about his weak approach to security have been proven false. Even the last president, a retired general, could not subdue Boko Haram, which Jonathan was close to defeating by 2015 before leaving office.”
He went on to highlight the rise of new security challenges under the APC, including increased farmer-herder conflicts and rampant banditry, noting, “The alarming insecurity we face now reflects the disconnect between the current administration and the realities on the ground.”
Amid growing public comparisons between Jonathan’s administration and the current government, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed recently stated he would withdraw his presidential ambition if Jonathan agrees to run.
In response, the APC criticized the PDP, accusing the party of desperation and clinging to anything for survival.
