Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has issued a strong warning to Christians against valuing material possessions over their spiritual health, describing such choices as unwise.
Speaking during the RCCG’s 73rd Annual Convention, themed “The Overcomers,” Adeboye stressed that true victory in Christ comes through spiritual discipline and rejecting the allure of worldly pleasures.
He clarified that God does not oppose enjoyment, but reminded believers that the physical body they invest in will eventually decay, while the soul will stand before God.
“God is not against enjoyment,” he said. “But the body you’re pampering and beautifying will return to dust. It’s your spirit that will stand before God, so nurture that.”
Although prosperity is part of God’s promises, Adeboye condemned dishonest ways of acquiring wealth, including lying, theft, and deceit.
“If you’re chasing money and losing your soul in the process, that’s stupidity,” he warned. “What use is your wealth when you die? You can’t take any of it with you.”
He described the life of an overcomer as one requiring sacrifice, discipline, and a refusal to conform to worldly standards. “Becoming a champion takes discipline. Staying one takes even more because everyone is after your crown,” he added.
Adeboye urged Christians to remain spiritually vigilant and not give in to fleshly desires.
“Life is warfare filled with battles,” he noted. “But take heart you’re not alone. The Holy Spirit in you is greater than anything you’re up against.”
Reflecting on the dual nature of humanity, he concluded: “You are a mix of dust and divinity. The flesh pulls you down, but the Spirit of God lifts you up. To live as an overcomer, you must choose the Spirit.”
