A serious aviation incident occurred on Tuesday night at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Imo State, where a light aircraft crash-landed and somersaulted, causing panic among airport users.
The aircraft involved was a Cessna 172 operated by Skypower Express. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded, though all four occupants were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Emergency Diversion
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the accident through a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji. She detailed that the plane, with registration number 5N-ASR, was originally en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport. However, the crew declared an in-flight emergency after developing mid-air technical trouble, necessitating an unscheduled diversion to Owerri.
The Crash and Response
The accident reportedly took place around 8:00 pm as the aircraft approached Runway 17.1 Upon landing, the plane somersaulted.
Emergency teams at the airport were immediately deployed to secure the scene. Mrs. Oladeji noted that there was no post-crash fire, and airport operations were not disrupted; other flights continued to operate normally as the runway remained functional. Efforts are currently being made to evacuate the wreckage for technical examination.
Investigation Launch
The Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., stated that a full investigation has been launched. He assured the public that investigators are working with relevant agencies to preserve critical evidence at the site and that further updates will be provided as the probe continues.
