Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, will commence a one-month leave starting Friday, August 29, 2025, and has officially transferred authority to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal.
The announcement was contained in a letter forwarded to the Oyo State House of Assembly and read by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The decision aligns with Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates governors to notify their state assemblies before proceeding on leave.
In the letter, Governor Makinde confirmed that Deputy Governor Lawal will oversee state affairs as Acting Governor during his absence, with Makinde expected to return and resume office on Monday, September 29, 2025.
“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025,” the letter partly stated.
The House of Assembly acknowledged receipt of the notice and assured full cooperation for a seamless handover, reaffirming its commitment to constitutional order and smooth governance.
By this development, Barrister Bayo Lawal will fully take charge of the governor’s duties from August 29 until Makinde’s return.
Meanwhile, the Assembly announced that its next plenary session will hold on September 16, 2025.
