Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has appointed his nephew and Afrobeats sensation, David Adeleke better known as Davido as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun chapter.
Government’s Drive to Revamp Osun Sports
Adewusi noted that the initiative is part of the state government’s broader plan to rejuvenate sports in Osun and establish a sustainable funding framework through partnerships between the private and public sectors.
He also revealed that the state is in the final stages of creating the Osun State Sports Commission, a central body that will oversee sports development, administration, and policy execution.
According to Adewusi, the introduction of the Sports Trust Fund will attract private sponsorships and philanthropic support, ensuring long-term financing for sports programs and infrastructure.
Davido’s Appointment and Vision
The Deputy Governor shared that Davido accepted the role immediately, expressing his commitment to advancing sports in Osun. He added that the singer’s global influence and network would help bring international attention and financial investment to the state’s sports sector.
Adewusi further confirmed the government’s commitment to completing the renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, aiming to transform it into a world-class facility capable of hosting both national and international events.
Mixed Reactions from the Public
The appointment has stirred mixed opinions among Nigerians, particularly Osun residents, given Adeleke’s growing pattern of appointing family members to strategic roles.
Recall that in 2023, the governor also appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, son of the late former governor Isiaka Adeleke, as Chairman of the Board of Local Government.
