The newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged to make accountability, respect for human rights, and a strict anti-corruption stance the foundation of his leadership within the Nigeria Police Force.
Addressing the public on Wednesday, Disu described his elevation to the position as both surprising and emotional. He expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility.
Appointment Came as a Surprise
Disu revealed that the President’s public recognition of his previous work deeply touched him.
“The appointment means a lot to me… it came at a time I was not expecting it. That makes me give thanks to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for his magnanimity in seeing me fit to be appointed as the Inspector General of Police.”
He added that the President’s remarks indicated that officers’ performances across the country are being carefully observed, interpreting it as a call to deliver meaningful results.
“It shows the President took his time to monitor officers working everywhere in the country… and it shows the President was throwing a challenge at me to go out there and do what I’m known for.”
Citizens Are the Boss
Outlining his immediate plans, Disu said his first engagement with officers would centre on reorientation and redefining their relationship with the public.
“My top priority is one of the first lectures I’m going to have with my men. I’m going to talk to them and let them know that the citizens of the country are the boss.”
He emphasised that effective policing depends heavily on public trust and cooperation.
Zero Tolerance for Corruption
The Acting IGP also promised to clamp down on misconduct within the force and ensure officers strictly observe human rights principles.
“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over. I will ensure that I train and encourage them to follow human rights standards. I will try to follow a regime of zero tolerance for corruption.”
He further assured that officers’ welfare would not be overlooked, stressing that better working conditions would translate into improved performance.
Tackling Insecurity
Speaking on issues such as banditry and insurgency, Disu acknowledged the dedication of personnel already engaged on the front lines, noting that his role would be to boost morale and improve coordination.
“All I need to do is to channel their morale and their thoughts to make things better.”
His appointment comes after the tenure of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, which faced criticism from sections of the public over allegations of corruption, rights violations, and systemic misconduct.
