The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for restoring his full statutory rights, describing the move as a significant setback for detractors of the monarchy.
According to NAIJALOG, the Oba also expressed joy over the abolition of newly created traditional councils in Edo South senatorial district, established by the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki. The monarch referred to the development as “a cause for celebration among allies and a marvel before Almighty God.”
In a letter of appreciation dated November 27, 2024, Oba Ewuare II commended Governor Okpebholo’s administration for reversing key decisions made by the previous government, including the revocation of the concession for the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre in Benin City. The letter, signed by notable palace chiefs such as Norense Ozigbo-Esere (Osuma of Benin), Edionwe Oliha (Oliha of Benin), and Osaro Idah (Obazelu of Benin), highlighted the gratitude of the Benin Kingdom.
The statement, issued by Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, expressed deep appreciation for the restoration of the Oba’s rights and privileges as the sole traditional ruler of the Benin Kingdom in Edo South Senatorial District and custodian of its rich cultural heritage.
Part of the letter read:
“We deeply thank your Excellency for deeming it fit and necessary to restore the full Statutory Rights of the Oba of Benin, for respecting the rights and privileges of the Omo N’Oba as the only Traditional Ruler of Benin Kingdom in Edo South Senatorial District and custodian of the rich-cultural heritage.
“This action of Your Excellency, which is coming barely two weeks into your administration, is very well applauded. It is devastating on our detractors. It’s joyous to our friends, and marvelous in the eyes of the Almighty God.
“The Omo N’Oba prays for God Almighty to continue to strengthen and guide your Excellency as you continue to bring about a meaningful and robust transformation of Edo State.”
The Oba also acknowledged Governor Okpebholo as a divine instrument to bring order to Edo State.
NAIJALOG previously reported that the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki had withdrawn the Oba’s statutory rights, creating parallel Benin Traditional Councils (BTCs) across the seven Local Government Areas in Edo South. This move followed unrest led by suspended Enigie (Benin Dukes), accused of rebelling against the monarchy.
