The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has spoken out about the purported plot to rally corps members for armed conflict with the military regime in Niger.
According to a statement made by the NYSC’s head of press and public relations on Saturday, August 5, Eddy Megwa, the service has no plans to make such a move.
Megwa’s comment was a response to the viral video’s assertion that the NYSC intended to use corps members in an alleged military operation against the Republic of Niger.
His statement reads in part:
“Management wishes to state that there is no iota of truth in the story fabricated by the purveyor, a skit and content creator.”
The statement further urged corps members and prospective corps members, parents, and the general public to disregard the report, adding that the video is a crime in its entirety.
Then he issued a warning to material and sketch creators to refrain from disseminating information that would endanger national security.
In the past, the DG of the NYSC stated in an interview with Channels that corps members may be called up for combat if necessary and that they had been prepared for it during their three years of service.
The video reappeared on social media after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) under President Bola Tinubu issued an ultimatum to the military junta in the Niger Republic.
The democratically elected government in Niger was deposed by the military junta, who then imprisoned the president.
