The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has called off its nationwide strike after reaching an agreement with the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals on Tuesday over the dispute surrounding workers’ unionisation.
The two-day strike had forced the closure of several fuel stations across the country, following accusations that the Dangote Group was denying employees the right to join recognised labour unions.
During a conciliation meeting in Abuja, chaired by Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, both parties held extensive discussions which resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
According to the MoU:
- Workers’ unionisation is a legal right under existing laws.
- Management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals agreed to allow employees who wish to unionise to freely do so.
- The unionisation process will begin immediately and must be completed between September 9–22, 2025.
- The employer will not create or impose any alternative union.
- No employee will face victimisation as a result of the strike or unionisation efforts.
With this resolution, NUPENG officially suspended its industrial action.
