The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have ordered the shutdown of electricity and fuel supplies in Imo State starting from midnight on November 8, 2023. The decision was reached by the organised labour unions after the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, was brutally assaulted last week. Additionally, the NLC and TUC have ordered aviation workers to ensure that flights into and outside the state are suspended.

The decisions were made during an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting that was held on Tuesday afternoon. In a statement released at the end of the meeting, the NEC-in-session stated that “All Public and Private Sector workers are to immediately down tools indefinitely.” All workers and affiliates are expected to ensure compliance from wherever they are.

Earlier on Tuesday, the organised labour unions had declared a total nationwide strike which is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
