The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the national electricity grid, which collapsed earlier on Saturday, has been fully restored. In a statement by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, it was revealed that the grid experienced a disruption around 8:15 a.m., affecting several cities.
Ms. Mbah explained that the issue originated from an explosion in a current transformer at the Jebba Transmission Substation. The protection system was triggered, isolating the problem and preventing further damage. Engineers at the station worked swiftly to isolate the faulty transformer and restore power.
This incident follows a similar grid collapse earlier in the week, prompting criticism from various quarters, including Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi, who labeled the recurring failures as a “national shame” and a result of poor leadership and policy execution.
Despite the privatisation of Nigeria’s power generation and distribution sectors in 2013, grid failures continue to occur, highlighting ongoing challenges in the country’s power infrastructure.
