Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina secured the first runner-up position at the 73rd Miss Universe competition held in Mexico.
The highly anticipated finale took place on Sunday morning at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, where the tension was palpable as Nigeria and Denmark awaited the announcement of the winner.
The competition, widely regarded as one of the most exciting in recent years, showcased the talent, intellect, and grace of women from across the globe.
In an Instagram post, the event organizers described the thrilling moment, saying, “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment.”
Ultimately, Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, was crowned Miss Universe 2024, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Although she didn’t win the crown, Adetshina’s exceptional performance earned her praise from judges and viewers alike, who admired her poise and charisma throughout the event.
Adetshina’s journey to Miss Universe was not without controversy. Earlier this year, she withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition after advancing to the finals, following backlash regarding her nationality.
Undeterred, Adetshina represented Taraba State at the national level and went on to win the Miss Universe Nigeria title, earning her a spot at the global competition.
Her achievement echoes the historic success of Nigeria’s Agbani Darego, who, on November 16, 2001, became the first Black African woman to win the Miss World title at just 18 years old.
