Esther Abimiku Ibanga, a Nigerian pastor and activist was on Tuesday announced as the recipient of the 32nd Niwano Peace Prize, a Japanese peace prize worth $170,000 for her fight against religious extremism in Northern Nigeria.
The Niwano Peace Foundation says the founder of of “Women Without Walls Initiative” (WOWWI), is receiving the honour because of her courageous efforts to promote women’s empowerment and peaceful co-existence.
Ibanga, has kept up a vocal protest against the kidnappings that Boko Haram has made almost routine, the Niwano Peace Foundation said.
“Esther has worked extensively to foster and facilitate reconciliation between conflicting religious and tribal groups,” setting up an organisation that has all tribal women leaders on its membership, the Buddhist group-backed foundation said.
An award presentation ceremony will take place in Tokyo on May 14. In addition to an award certificate, Ms. Esther will receive a medal and 20 million yen.
