The wife goes in with a belly and comes out with a baby – an ideal situation for many men waiting outside the Delivery Room. But times, they are a’changing!
Nigerian Men: Would you be with your wife in the delivery room?
“No, I can’t do it, I can’t stand it,” Said one man laughing. “If I happened to be a doctor, it’s as if you’re asking me to operate my wife,” he added.
“Of course, as long as she’s my wife,” added another man.
Kayode went ahead and speaks to a medical practitioner “Dr Tolu Akilore” who explains the essence of a man’s presence in the delivery room.
“Yes, it’s a very good idea, first of all it gives the man an idea of what he’s wife is going through and that is very helpful, “said Dr Tolu enthusiastically.
“It also gives the woman a lot of moral support, what we (doctors) cannot give,” he added.
Although, for some women, their husband’s presence in the labor room is NOT for moral or emotional support .
“His presence does not really matter, but at least, if he’s there he’ll see what we’re facing so he won’t treat his wife anyhow,” said one nursing mother.
Kayode also spoke to a mid-wife in the hospital to find out if men actually do go into the labor room.
“Majority of them don’t like staying in the labor room, they prefer staying outside and begging the woman to please corporate,” said the midwife.
