The newly confirmed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has emphasized the need for Nigeria to attain a level of electoral credibility where defeated candidates can genuinely congratulate the winners.
Speaking during his Senate screening on Thursday, shortly before his confirmation, Amupitan pledged to review the Electoral Act to further strengthen the integrity and transparency of elections across the country.
The law professor pointed out that there are notable inconsistencies in Nigeria’s election timelines, stressing that improvements in this area would help enhance the system and rebuild public trust.
According to him, ensuring credible elections is key to restoring voter confidence and deepening democracy.
“So, we’re going to see how an election is credible, so that the loser will come and congratulate the winner and say, ‘You won fairly and well’.
“So if we can do that, it’s just like a judge convicting a person, sentencing him to death, and he (convict) says, ‘Well done, because I believe I’ve gotten justice,’” the new INEC chief said.
NAIJALOG reports that Prof. Amupitan was confirmed by the Senate after over two hours of thorough questioning during the session.
