The Nigeria music industry has a lot of talented artistes who have carved a niche for themselves in their different genres . NAIJALOG crew recently caught up with one of such creative musicians popularly called JAHBLESS and he bared his mind on the past, present and future.
From the time you left till now, what has changed in the industry
When I was out of the country I was still working and the industry is till the same but getting better and growing tremendously, this is encouraging, but it is still the way we run the business.
What inspires you to write your songs?
My inspiration comes from God, my environment and if I have any issue with you as an artiste I write about it. The only time I will stop writing is when nothing is happening.
Content wise how would you rate the industry?
Content wise we are losing it. If the industry is structured artistes should develop themselves in songwriting. If you can write good songs get a song writer to help you in that aspect. When I write my songs, I consider if the songs can stand the test of time and if my son listens to the song would he be proud of me .As artistes we must not only consider the present rave of the song but its longevity.
What are the challenges bedeviling the industry?
One of the challenges is the structure, scrutinizing the materials is of essence. There ought to be a body to check songs before they are aired on radio and TV. Piracy is a major threat, distribution channels should become a formidable link so as to combat piracy.
Financial challenges for upcoming artistes who can’t promote themselves in terms of recording and distribution /marketing.
Plans for 2015
Releasing my album this year titled ‘I am me’ it’s a 17 tracker featuring the likes of Olamide,KissDaniels,Reminisce,Tymix and a host of other musicians. I will also be going on tours nationally and internationally.
How was growing up like?
It was wonderful, I grew up in a family of four and it revolved around church and school. The passion for music has always been part of me.
Advice for upcoming artistes?
You must be sure that you are talented, believe in yourself, with consistency you will excel. When you make your songs don’t give it to friends to listen to because they won’t tell you the truth but give it to DJs and Radio presenters to listen to it, these are professionals that will tell you the facts about your songs. I am creating a platform known as e-music where upcoming artistes can upload their songs and if you get 100000 likes on the internet, we will shoot a video for you and give you a 50% contract.
