U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday escalated his accusations against Nigeria, calling the country “a disgrace” as he renewed claims that the government is failing to protect Christian communities from extremist attacks.
His remarks follow his decision to designate Nigeria a country of particular concern, alleging what he describes as widespread persecution of Christians.
Despite these claims, the Nigerian government has consistently rejected the allegations, maintaining that the nation upholds religious freedom for all.
Speaking on a conservative radio show, Trump doubled down on his threat to consider sending U.S. military forces to confront Islamist militants in Nigeria if local authorities do not take stronger measures to stop the violence.
According to the U.S. president, Nigeria has become, in his words, a disgraced nation, and he alleged that Christians are being killed in large numbers.
He said:
“Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace,” Trump said. “They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide, and I’m really angry about it. And we pay, you know, we give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping.”
His comments come amid rising global scrutiny of Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly following a series of high-profile attacks targeting schools and Christian communities.
