The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has confirmed that a total of 227 individuals 215 students and 12 teachers were abducted from St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area.

CAN Chairman, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, who visited the affected community, reassured parents that religious leaders, government officials, and security agencies are working together to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped victims.

Several students were able to escape during the attack, prompting many parents to withdraw their children from the school. As a result, the school has suspended all academic activities.

The attack occurred around 2 a.m. when armed men killed a security guard before taking away the students and staff. Reports indicate that the truck used by the kidnappers broke down, forcing them to continue their escape into the forest on foot.

Government faults school for reopening

The Niger State government criticised the school for resuming classes despite prior warnings about heightened insecurity in the area. Police have also confirmed the incident and stated that tactical units and military teams have been mobilised for the rescue operation.

Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph of the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora added that one security personnel sustained severe injuries during the attack. This kidnapping is the latest in a series of assaults on schools across northern Nigeria, prompting closures in states such as Niger, Kwara, Katsina, and Plateau. In response to the worsening situation, the Federal Ministry of Education has ordered the closure of 41 federal unity colleges.

Kidnapping trend

Since 2014, more than 1,500 schoolchildren have been kidnapped in northern Nigeria, with attacks now spreading beyond previously affected regions. Experts warn of long-term trauma for victims, disrupted education, and the growing financial incentives behind ransom kidnappings. Although initiatives such as the Safe Schools Declaration and NSCDC-led protective efforts exist, inconsistent implementation continues to expose students and teachers to repeated dangers.
