Rishi Sunak, who has the support of the majority of Conservative Party MPs, will be the UK’s first British Asian Prime Minister.
Rishi Sunak is set to become the United Kingdom’s next Prime Minister. This follows Penny Mordaunt’s withdrawal from the Conservative Party leadership race.
Because the Conservative Party has a majority in the British parliament, its leader automatically becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Mr Sunak, who has the backing of the majority of Conservative Party MPs, will be the UK’s first British Asian Prime Minister.
He will take over for Liz Truss, who stepped down as Prime Minister last week after only 45 days in office.
Ms Truss took over for Boris Johnson, who was forced to resign due to multiple scandals.
Mr Sunak served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Mr Johnson from 2020 to 2022, but resigned from the cabinet following the multiple scandals.
Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee, confirmed that Mr Sunak will be the next Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister.
He was the only candidate left after Ms Mordaunt dropped out just before the deadline of 14:00.
Mr Sunak formally declared his intention to run for prime minister on Sunday, but had been quietly gathering support from Conservatives.
He did, however, compete in the election that brought Ms Truss to power, finishing second to her.
Ms Mordaunt announced her withdrawal from the race on Monday, saying she was proud of her campaign and would fully support Mr Sunak.
Both the opposition Labour Party and the Scottish National Party have called for general elections.
