Nigeria’s newly acquired presidential jet reportedly arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Sunday, August 19, at 8:29 pm. The luxurious Airbus A330, estimated to be worth around N150 billion, landed ahead of President Tinubu’s planned trip to France on Monday, August 19 (today). The President is expected to leave Abuja for a brief work visit in France and return shortly thereafter.
The acquisition of the jet has sparked controversy, with critics questioning the high cost in the face of economic challenges and rising inflation. However, the government has defended the purchase, citing the aircraft as essential for diplomatic missions and national security.
The Airbus A330 is one of three presidential jets previously seized by a French court in favor of a Chinese company over a dispute involving the Ogun State Government. Despite this, the Chinese firm, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, released the aircraft as a goodwill gesture ahead of the anticipated meeting between President Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron.
In July, the jet was spotted in France undergoing final preparations. It was assigned a tail number featuring the seal of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, signaling its readiness for delivery.
Previously owned by a German bank that repossessed it from an Arab prince and businessman who defaulted on a substantial loan, the Nigerian government eventually purchased the aircraft. The plane is outfitted with luxurious amenities, including a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, an office, a conference and dining room, as well as first-class and economy seating.
