The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has presented three key demands to the Edo State and Federal Government following the tragic killing of northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State.
The forum warned that the northern region would no longer tolerate such reckless acts from the southern part of the country.
NEF spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jiddere, made these demands in a statement released to DAILY POST over the weekend.
NEF’s Three Key Demands:
1️⃣ Public Arrest and Trial: NEF insists that those responsible for the killing of 16 northern travelers must be arrested and tried publicly to ensure transparency and accountability.
2️⃣ Unreserved Public Apology: The forum demands an official apology from the Edo State authorities and the people of Uromi, alongside a commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.
3️⃣ Compensation for Victims’ Families: NEF calls for financial compensation to be paid to the victims’ families in line with their religious and cultural standards.
Additionally, NEF issued a 14-day ultimatum for these demands to be met, warning of serious consequences if they are ignored.
In the statement, NEF stressed that the North has endured multiple reckless attacks in the past, and this situation must not be allowed to repeat itself.
The mob attack, which took place as the travelers were en route to Kano from Port Harcourt for the Sallah celebrations, has sparked nationwide outrage.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security agencies to track down those responsible, while northern governors, senators, and youth groups have all strongly condemned the killings.
The National Assembly has also joined in criticizing the extrajudicial killings, emphasizing that such violence is unacceptable.
