The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and MTN have given an update on the repair of undersea submarine cables that were cut, disrupting data, voice and call services in major parts of Africa, including Nigeria. Approximately 90% of peak utilisation capacities have now been restored. Reuben Muoka, NCC’s director of public affairs, released a statement on Monday, March 18, 2023, stating that the voice and data services affected by cable cuts have been restored. The restoration is a relief to millions of affected users who have been facing connectivity issues over the past few days. The disruption was attributed to cuts in undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, affecting data and voice services across the region. All operators impacted by the cuts have taken recovery capacity from submarine cables that were not affected by the cuts, according to NCC. MTN also confirmed the repair development, assuring full-service restoration.
