The Nigerian government has officially banned Eedris Abdulkareem’s newly released protest track titled “Tell Your Papa.”
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) made the announcement Thursday evening, citing the song as inappropriate and offensive for public broadcast.
In a memo signed by NBC’s Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, the commission instructed all Nigerian radio and television stations to stop playing the track.
The memo read: “The National Broadcasting Commission has flagged the song ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem, which is currently gaining traction on social media, as unsuitable for public broadcast due to its objectionable content.
“It is therefore classified as Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB), as it violates Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. The material is considered offensive, inappropriate, and contrary to public decency.”
According to NAIJALOG, the song, which dropped earlier in the week, has stirred up conversation online over its bold critique of Nigeria’s leadership and prevailing economic hardships.
In the song, Abdulkareem calls out President Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, urging him to confront his father about the struggles facing ordinary Nigerians.
