Nigerians have reacted with mixed feelings to Kemi Badenoch’s recent election as leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, where she defeated Robert Jenrick with 53,806 votes. This win makes Badenoch, representing North West Essex, the first Black woman to lead a major UK political party.
While many, like media mogul Mo Abudu and former presidential aide Reno Omokri, celebrated her success as a win for Nigerians and Africans, others voiced concerns. Some critics took issue with Badenoch’s past comments about Nigeria, where she described the UK as her “home” and Nigeria as the place she “fled.” She also referenced challenges like power shortages, drawing criticism from Nigerians on social media who felt her remarks demeaned her roots.
Badenoch, who spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, has previously defended British colonialism, which further fueled controversy. Supporters, however, like Maxwell Adeyemi, defended her, saying her comments reflected the reality many Nigerians face.
