Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has appointed Chidimma Adetshina, the current Miss Universe Nigeria, as the state’s ambassador.
The announcement was made on Thursday during a visit by Chidimma, accompanied by her father, Okechukwu Onwe, to the Government House in Enugu.
Governor Mbah commended Chidimma’s perseverance, describing her as a “true representation of the people of Enugu.” He praised her resilience in overcoming obstacles and highlighted her potential to inspire the youth, particularly young girls in Enugu State.
“Your story is truly inspiring. Despite efforts to discredit and discourage you, you’ve shown that you are a true daughter of Enugu State. You overcame those challenges with the strength and determination that our people are known for. You can be a powerful influence on our young people, especially girls,” Mbah said.
The governor also assured Chidimma of the state’s full support as she prepares to represent Nigeria at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Mexico. He encouraged her to use her platform to inspire and mentor young people by sharing her experiences and journey.
In response, Chidimma expressed her gratitude to the people of Enugu for their warm reception.
“I believe my story is impactful, not just in Nigeria but globally. Many young people can relate to it and draw lessons from my journey,” she stated.
Born in 2001 in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian father from Enugu and a Mozambican-born mother, Chidimma faced controversy earlier this year during her participation in the Miss South Africa pageant. Issues arose over her nationality, leading her to withdraw after the South African Department of Home Affairs accused her mother of fraud and identity theft. Chidimma denied the allegations and maintained her innocence.
Following her withdrawal, Chidimma entered the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, winning the title on August 14, 2023. Despite facing criticism and accusations of winning “out of pity,” she defended her victory, asserting that she earned it through hard work and determination.
As Enugu State’s newly appointed ambassador, Chidimma is expected to engage with and inspire young people, serving as a symbol of resilience and determination.
