Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently addressed the swirling rumors about her alleged divorce from former U.S. President Barack Obama, which surfaced after she didn’t accompany him to Jimmy Carter’s funeral.
The speculation gained more traction when Michelle also revealed she wouldn’t be attending Donald Trump’s second inauguration, prompting many to assume marital issues were the cause.
Speaking on Sophia Bush’s “Work in Progress” podcast, Michelle clarified the situation and pushed back against the assumptions.
She said, “What I find interesting is that when I say ‘no,’ most people understand and respect it.”
She continued, “As women, we often feel pressured to please everyone. So much so that when I made personal choices this year, people couldn’t imagine I was simply doing what felt right for me — instead, they jumped to the conclusion that my husband and I were splitting up.”
Michelle emphasized how society often misinterprets women’s autonomy: “It’s hard for people to accept that a woman can make decisions independently. But that’s the reality. When we finally pause to ask ourselves, ‘What am I doing, and who am I doing it for?’ — if the answer doesn’t match what people expect from us, it’s quickly seen in a negative light.”
