Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has offered valuable advice on what to consider when selecting a life partner.
Speaking metaphorically, she encouraged people to approach choosing a spouse the same way they would select a top player for a sports team. Using basketball as an example, she emphasized that you’d naturally pick a well-rounded player who can do more than just shoot—someone versatile and capable in multiple areas.
Michelle stressed that in marriage, both partners should be able and willing to take on all responsibilities. “Everyone needs to be able to do everything,” she said, highlighting the importance of balance and shared effort in a relationship.
She cautioned against choosing a partner who shirks basic responsibilities, saying, “You don’t want to marry a man who says, ‘I don’t cook.’ What if I can’t cook one day?”
She pointed out that life is full of uncertainties, and it’s important for both individuals in a marriage to step up and support each other when needed. “If you’re a woman who can’t manage the finances because you’ve left it to your husband, that can become a problem. Life is too complex for a relationship where the responsibilities aren’t equally shared,” she explained.
In a closing caption, she added: “Choose a partner who won’t just split the tasks with you, but someone who can fully step in when life throws the unexpected your way.”
