Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has appointed Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy.
The announcement was made on Friday in Benin City, with officials noting that the appointment is aimed at strengthening communication between the government and residents across the state.
Government taps her influence and experience
In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, the governor described Johnson-Okojie as a highly respected public figure whose reach spans social, cultural, and generational boundaries.
According to the statement, her responsibilities will include enhancing public communication, promoting civic involvement, and helping to project government policies effectively at the grassroots level.
The actress has prior experience in public service, having served as Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment, Arts, and Culture to former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello. Her background in that role was highlighted as one of the reasons behind her new appointment.
Humanitarian work strengthens the case.
Beyond her film career, Johnson-Okojie is also known for her philanthropic efforts through the Mercy Johnson-Okojie Foundation, which focuses on women’s empowerment, child welfare, education assistance, and healthcare initiatives.
The Edo State Government stated that the appointment reflects Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to leveraging the credibility and goodwill of prominent Nigerians to advance his vision of a more inclusive and united Edo State.
Officials expressed optimism that her strong connection with the public would help foster closer ties between the government and the people.
