Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, widely known as May D, has opened up about his secret marriage to a Swedish woman and their eventual divorce.
The ‘Soundtrack’ hitmaker disclosed that after moving to Sweden, he became a “house husband,” focusing on childcare while his wife worked. However, their marriage ended during the COVID-19 lockdown when he was unable to return to Sweden from Nigeria.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, May D explained that although he stayed home to care for their child, his earnings from shows significantly outpaced his wife’s income.
“I moved to Sweden after a show and decided to settle there since my girlfriend was Swedish. I became a house husband. What else should I do? Go out and work?
“My wife had a job, but when I performed, I earned five times her monthly salary. I was comfortable staying home to take care of our child because my wife couldn’t manage both work and childcare alone,” he said.
Addressing their divorce, May D revealed, “We separated during the COVID-19 lockdown because I got stuck in Nigeria. That’s when she filed for divorce. Their way of thinking is different from ours.”
