The political landscape in Kano State has undergone a major shift as twenty-one members of the State House of Assembly have officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Governor’s Influence
The announcement, made on Monday, follows the resignation of Governor Abba Yusuf from the NNPP. The governor cited “protracted internal crises and legal disputes” as the primary reasons for his exit, noting that the issues have significantly weakened the party’s structure nationwide. Governor Yusuf is also expected to officially register with the APC today.
Leadership leads the way
The wave of defections includes the entire leadership of the Assembly. Among those who crossed the carpet are the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore (Rogo), and the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butu Butu (Tofa/Rimin Gado).
Other principal officers who joined the APC include:
-
Majority Leader: Lawan Hussain (Dala)
-
Deputy Majority Leader: Garba Shehu Fammar (Kibiya)
-
Chief Whip: Muddasir Ibrahim Zawachiki (Kumbotso)
-
Majority Whip: Zakariyya Abdullahi Nuhu (Gabasawa)
A Growing Trend
This move mirrors recent political realignments in the state, coming shortly after approximately 774 NNPP members in Rimin Gado Local Government Area defected to the APC.
