Liya, born Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola, has opened up about why she exited Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), explaining that the move was necessary for her personal and career development.

The singer, who made history as the first female artiste signed to the label in October 2020, officially left in 2023.

During an interview on Wahala with Josy Anne, Liya shared that her time at the label was emotionally draining and took a toll on her health. She revealed that she battled depression, fatigue, and other health-related issues, which ultimately led her to make the tough decision to walk away.

“Why did I leave? I just wanted more for myself, as a person and as an artist.

“It was sad, it was depressing, I was tired, I was sick, but it was a decision that I had to make for myself,” Liya said.

She also addressed the criticism she received while under the label, noting that many people misunderstood her situation and wrongly judged her as unproductive.

“They called me names people saying she’s lazy, she doesn’t know what she’s doing. They’re just pouring money on her, and she’s not doing anything,” she said.

Liya further disclosed that her struggles affected her activity online, revealing that she did not personally handle her Instagram account for over two years, leaving it in the hands of her manager.

Despite everything, she expressed appreciation for her manager’s understanding and support during that period.

“He was tired, but I’m so glad he understood. He never pushed me or forced me,” she added.

Liya rose to prominence after joining DMW in 2020, releasing songs like “Melo,” “Adua,” and “Lakiriboto.”
