A cross section of lecturers and students of the Lagos State University (LASU) called for the sack of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Obafunwa.
The aggrieved persons who marched on the Lagos State House of Assembly accused Prof. Obafunwa of alleged excesses and high handedness in the day to day running of the institution.
Addressing newsmen, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU\LASU), Dr Adekunle Idris, accused the institution’s vice chancellor, Professor Obafunwa of destroying the fabrics of the LASU system.
Idris said that protesters came on a peaceful protest to place their complaints in public domain since no one had been able to put to check the alleged excesses of the vice chancellor.
The University of Lagos Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Adesola Nassir, while speaking on the matter, explained that the mass rally was staged in a bid to seek government’s intervention in resolving the crisis.
“Our union is in need to further encourage the state government to do the needful and help LASU to redirect its gradual descent to crises,” he said, declaring that ASUU would be joining other civil society groups to stage a rally to further call the attention of the good people of Lagos State and Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola-led administration to the brewing crisis at LASU.
“If the crisis is not arrested, we are certain the consequence would not be in the interest of the government. For the umpteenth time, we are asking that the Lagos State governor and visitor to LASU, Mr Babatunde Fashola, to call the LASU Vice Chancellor to order, whilst at the same time setting up visitation panel to LASU immediately,” he demanded.
The protesters also accused Obafunwa of engaging in irregular promotions, alleging that he even awarded Ph.Ds while he had none himself.
The protesters, therefore, demanded for the resignation of Obafunwa, reversal of what they termed his vindictive withdrawal of Ph.D certificates.
