The head of the Lagos State Parks and Garages (LASPG), Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), announced that transporters in the state will not take part in the organized labor’s planned protest.
During a meeting with transport union leaders and operators on Tuesday, Akinsanya said that about 50,000 agency members would not be taking part in the Nigeria Labour Congress’ (NLC) scheduled demonstration on Wednesday.
Instead, he asserted, the park and parking garage administrators had agreed to a 25% reduction in the fines the union handed to drivers.
“After careful deliberation, we came to the decision that we will not participate in any strike or protest march being organized to bring the Federal Government’s attention to the subject under discussion in the nation. Due to the Lagos State government’s recent announcement of interventions in the sector, all families and individuals involved in transportation would be at work to take people to their various destinations without incident.
“The state of Lagos has created a favorable environment for our activity. Therefore, there is no justification for us to participate in any strike that may imperil the state’s tranquility. The state government has implemented a number of palliative measures, namely a 50% cut in government public transportation and a review of our yellow bus tariffs, which will significantly lessen the impact of the loss of the subsidy.
“We have also begun internal measures, such as union tickets and negative appraisals of the Lagos State administration. Due to this, commercial drivers will charge less for transportation. Therefore, we at the Lagos State Parks and Garages categorically reject any strike or other kind of protest by organized labor or any other group. All of our members are obligated to carry out their regular responsibilities without fear or intimidation.
